Pat Thomas is a living legend of Ghanaian Highlife, as are many of the musicians that play on this record – such as Ralph Karikari, who was behind the outstanding basslines of Dr. K Gyasi’s Noble Kings; Osei Tutu, trumpet player of Hedzoleh Soundz; and Tony Allen, who needs no introduction. But equally exiting is the inclusion of a new generation of musicians who also play on the record – read more about the project on the Strut website.
Having fallen fully in love with 60s & 70s Highlife while working on Soundway’s Ghana Special in 2009, I didn’t expect any new record to quite capture the beauty of it again now that so few musicians still play the form. To hear it being played & produced so well, and with Thomas still in such fine vocal form, is a genuine joy. It was a real honour to have provided art direction and design for this new release on Strut.
